MIDDLE SCHOOL OBJECTIVES:

Middle School Keyboarding Standards and Objectives:

 

7th/8thth Grade

Know correct keyboarding technique

  • Show correct body and finger positions

  • Learn alphabetic keys by touch

  • Keep eyes on copy

  • Use correct reaches from home row keys (asdf jkl;)

  • Demonstrate correct fingering of period, comma and question mark

  • Demonstrate correct use of space bar, enter key and shift key

  • Demonstrate correct use of alphabetic, numeric and symbol keys

  • Demonstrate correct use of the numeric keypad

  • Demonstrate correct keyboarding technique while keying from dictation and printed copy

  • Review keys with teacher-directed keyboarding program

  • Compose at the keyboard

Demonstrate required speed and accuracy

  • 7th Grade: Achieve speed of 25 wpm speed at 95% accuracy on one-minute timed writings

  • 8th Grade: Achieve speed of 30 wpm speed at 95% accuracy on one and two-minute timed writings

Keyboarding technique in the elementary school will be evaluated using the following criteria:

TECHNIQUE:

Proper Keyboarding Technique

Good Posture

  • I am sitting up tall.

  • I am leaning slightly forward in my chair.

  • I am facing toward my computer.

 

Body Position

  • My keyboard is at the edge of the table.

  • I am a ‘hand span’ away from my keyboard and an arm’s length away from the monitor.

  • My body is centered with the B key.

 

Feet of the Floor

  • My feet are on the floor.

  • My feet are slightly apart.

  • I feel balanced.

 

Fingers Curved

  • My fingers are comfortably curved.

  • My fingers are upright and not leaning.

  • My thumbs are resting on the space bar.

 

Fingers on Home Row

  • My fingers are resting lightly on Home Row.

  • My index fingers are resting of F and J.

  • With each key stroke my fingers quickly return to Home Row.

 

Quiet Wrists & Elbows

  • My wrists are level and relaxed.

  • My wrists and arms are not resting on the keyboard or table.

  • My elbows are resting naturally at my side.

  • My shoulders are relaxed.

 

Eyes on Copy

  • My copy is in the right place.

  • My copy is adjusted properly.

  • My eyes are on my copy or my monitor.

  • I never look down at my keys.
